Here's a fun craft project for you and the little ones. It's quick, cheap and easy and at the end you'll have one or more unique puffer fish to hang from the ceiling or a curtain rod!

If desired, you can also make a variety of slimmer fish using the same basic method and materials.

Materials

For every puffer fish, you will need:
  • 1 x empty onion bag or similar mesh bag (use different types for a variety of colours)
  • 1 x medium-sized freezer bag
  • quantity of light cushion stuffing
  • 2 x rubber or elastic bands
  • 1 pair of wobbly eyes (from a craft supplier)
  • 2 x cupcake papers
  • scissors
  • strong craft glue
  • glitter glue (optional)
  • 1 x paper clip
  • fishing line or thread

Method

Organise all your materials within easy reach. Protect your work surface with newspaper or an old sheet. Have a couple of rags handy in case of spills.
  1. fill a freezer bag to the desired fatness and shape with stuffing material
  2. secure with an elastic band
  3. slip an onion bag over the stuffed plastic bag
  4. pull the "tail" of the plastic bag through the "tail" of the onion bag and secure both with the second elastic band
  5. trim the onion bag tail to the desired length and shape with scissors
  6. decide on the position of the eyes and glue in place on each side of the head, holding for 60 seconds or until they begin to stick and stay on by themselves
  7. set aside until glue is dry
  8. fold the cupcake liners in half or quarters (or simply cut to shape) and glue in place on both sides of the body, holding for 60 seconds or until they begin to stick and stay on by themselves
  9. set aside until glue is dry
  10. embellish with glitter glue if desired
  11. thread a paper clip through the onion bag mesh on top of the fish, attach fishing line or thread
  12. hang and enjoy your puffer fish mobile!
